Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress visit RIKEN Center for Computational Science

On November 12, Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress visited the RIKEN Center for Computational Science (R-CCS) in Kobe. President Gonokami began the visit by giving an overview of RIKEN and R-CCS, and then R-CCS Director Satoshi Matsuoka gave an explanation of the supercomputer Fugaku. Following that, Their Majesties were given a tour of the computer room, where they were able to see the actual machine up close. As the last part of the visit, they were given a laboratory tour by Team Leader Makoto Tsubokura of the Complex Phenomena Unified Simulation Research Team, who explained how his group used Fugaku to simulate how COVID-19 was spread by droplet dispersal and how these results were incorporated into national guidelines for infectious disease control.
