On October 4, RIKEN and Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) held the RIKEN-BNL Joint Workshop with RIKEN President Gonokami and BNL Laboratory Director JoAnne Hewett in attendance.
The morning session focused on quantum computing and quantum information science, and the afternoon session was on nuclear physics and fundamental quantum physics, with a total of 16 lectures. The afternoon session also included discussions on the Fundamental Quantum Science Program (FQSP) and the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC).
In addition, a memorial session was held as a lunch session to honor the achievements of Prof. Tsung-Dao Lee, the first director of the RIKEN BNL Research Center, who passed away in August this year. After greetings from RIKEN President Gonokami, BNL Director JoAnne Hewett, and Deputy Director-General, Research Promotion Bureau and Higher Education Policy, Science and Technology Policy Cooperation of MEXT Shigekazu Matsuura, two researchers with connections to Dr. Lee gave talks about him.
Approximately 70 people attended, including online participants from both inside and outside RIKEN including 13 people from BNL, and there were lively discussions at all of the sessions. The researchers who participated reported that it was a useful opportunity for exploring the possibility of future collaboration.
The two institutes plan to continue to develop further collaboration in the future.
