Research Summary

We, SR Physics Unit, investigate the electronic states and structures of materials by utilizing the intense and coherent X-rays provided by SPring-8 and SACLA, while also working on generation of X-ray beams with unique properties. For example, we are developing technologies to compress the pulse duration of X-ray free-electron lasers into the attosecond (10-18 seconds) regime, and exploring novel X-ray optics based on nonlinear X-ray-matter interactions. By harnessing these unprecedented X-ray beams, we aim to enable the observation of ultrafast dynamics and exotic quantum states in matter, thereby opening up new frontiers in physics, chemistry, and life sciences.
