Research Field

The RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences (IMS) tackles various research questions on the functions of the human genome and immune system so as to clarify the pathogenic mechanisms underlying human diseases and to translate this knowledge into novel therapies for the benefit of society. The Office of the IMS Center Director is responsible for the following matters: Securing and managing international collaborations, industry-academia collaborations, and internal RIKEN-wide collaborations; obtaining and managing research funds; public relations and outreach; sponsoring science assemblies, conferences, etc.; support for recruitment and human resource development; oversight of IMS lab assistant tasks; and other matters concerning the operation of IMS.

Managing Director, Office of the IMS Center Director: 1 position

Job Description

Work closely with the IMS Center Director to carry out the tasks outlined above, manage the office to ensure smooth operations, and create a framework to coordinate activities between the Office of the Center Director and relevant departments.

Specifically, the head of the Office of the IMS Center Director is responsible for the following:

  • Oversight and management of all Office of the Center Director activities
  • Supervision of office staff and fostering of human resources
  • Budget management

The job description may be changed during the contract period or upon contract renewal to the extent described above.

Qualifications

  • PhD (preferably in life sciences) or equivalent with sufficient knowledge related to job requirements.
  • 5 years are more experience in a management position and the leadership qualities required for the position.
  • Awareness of research ethics and compliance issues, appropriate social skills and management capabilities
  • Able to converse and exchange emails in both Japanese and English and capable of drafting scientific documents in English.
  • High level of communication skills and able to work compatibly with partners inside and outside RIKEN
  • Proactive and enthusiastic

*The successful applicant will be requested to work full-time in RIKEN.

RIKEN has implemented a work-from-home system. Employees can work from home in accordance with the prescribed procedures.
RIKEN may order the employee to change work locations, if necessary.

Salary and Benefits

Terms of contract

  • 1.A fixed-term employee with a single-year contract and can re-contract up to the end of the fiscal year, which marks 7 years from the date of employment by evaluation.
  • 2.RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee’s abilities, workload at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee’s center, laboratory, or project and RIKEN’s management situation and budget at the time. In principle, employment contracts will not be renewed for individuals older than 70 years.
  • 3.In principle, the Center's operation period will end as of March 31, 2025. If the project is discontinued after March 31, 2025, the period of your contract may be subject to change at the time of its renewal.

In principle, the first two months of employment is considered a trial period.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social security insurance will be applied. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai) is required.
Work hours: 9:00 to 17:20 (lunch break 12:00 to 12:50). However, the employee may change starting and ending times at their own discretion if it does not interfere with work performance.

The approximate amount of annual salary at the time of employment:
The annual salary at hire will be more than 8.4 million yen/year.

Days off include public holidays, New Year's holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.
Paid leave includes annual paid leave (up to 20 days per year depending on the month of employment), special paid leave (childcare, family nursing care, etc.), and work-life balance holidays (up to 7 days per year depending on the month of employment).
There are also additional leave systems such as maternity leave, childcare leave, and family nursing care leave.

Smoking will be entirely prohibited on site from April 2024.
These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.

Also, the employee is eligible for an exemption from repayment for category 1 scholarship loans provided by the Japan Student Services Organization before fiscal year 2003 and is eligible to apply for MEXT Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (Kakenhi).
