Fourteenth Global Summit of Research Institute Leaders

On October 4, leaders from 27 public research institutes from around the globe gathered in the historical city of Kyoto for the 14th Global Summit of Research Institute Leaders (RIL). The RIL is held annually as a satellite event of the STS forum.

This year’s theme was “Working together to enhance trust in science.” Following two initial presentations on the summit theme by Chief Executive Doug Hilton of Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) and President Otmar Wiestler of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, the other participants presented their institutes’ efforts and their thoughts on the theme. The participants concluded by adopting a Joint Statement summarizing the discussions. The summit was hosted by RIKEN and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), was co-chaired by President Makoto Gonokami of RIKEN and Chairman and CEO Antoine Petit of the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), and was moderated by former Swedish Ambassador to Japan and RIKEN Advisor, Stefan Noreen.
