RIKEN BDR Workshop “Exploring Organoid Design with Microengineering”
The RIKEN BDR Workshop, “Exploring Organoid Design with Microengineering”, will be held on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at the RIKEN Kobe Campus by RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (BDR).
The discovery of self-organizational processes within stem cell culture systems has enabled scientists to generate three-dimensional mini-organs known as organoids. We continue to see rapid advances being made in organoid research, which has led to the unveiling of developmental mechanisms, insights into disease pathogenesis, and development of applications for regenerative medicine.
Recently, there has been a global shift to adopt a more engineering-based perspective to organoid research by generating asymmetric cell culture "fields" that mimic in vivo conditions of living organisms using engineering approaches to manipulate and induce the autonomous formation and further complexity of multicellular systems. These engineering approaches are expected to lead to the development of technologies capable of replicating the three-dimensional structures and the intricate interconnections established among multiple organs within the body.
For this workshop, we have invited researchers who are working on cutting-edge research to develop engineering technologies to reconstruct more complex, multicellular and multi-organ systems and functions in vitro, which could not be achieved using conventional culturing methods. We hope that the workshop will serve to deepen our understanding of this emerging field as well as consider the future of organoid engineering research.
